What’s the Difference Between a Cucumber, a Pickle, and a Gherkin?

As a child I used to think that pickles were the baby offspring of healthy cucumbers. As it turns out, I wasn’t entirely correct, but I wasn’t entirely wrong either.

Pickles and gherkins are all from the same family as the cucumber, but they are just  different varietals. In fact there are many different kinds of cucumbers, and their sizes can range from up to 20 inches long, to just a few inches.

The smallest type of cucumber is the Gherkin, and the most popular type for pickling is the Kirby.

Generally, the cucumbers you find at your local grocery store are English Cucumbers. Some enthusiasts like to call this breed “the Burpless” cucumber because of its reputation for being seedless and thus, easy to digest.
